Real Wedding: A Royal Celebration at The Umrao, Delhi
March 12, 2026 · 6 min read
Some weddings are celebrations. Others are experiences. The wedding we covered at The Umrao, Delhi was the latter — a multi-day, grand celebration that combined modern luxury with timeless Indian traditions, set against one of Delhi NCR’s most beautiful heritage-luxury properties.
Here is the story of this wedding, through our lens.
The Venue: The Umrao, New Delhi
The Umrao is a luxury heritage resort on NH-8 near the Delhi-Gurugram border. It is a photographer’s dream — Mughal-inspired architecture with sandstone arches, manicured gardens, reflective pools, and interiors that blend Indian royalty with contemporary luxury.
Key features that made it exceptional for photography:
- The Grand Lawn: A sprawling outdoor space surrounded by arched corridors — the mandap was set up here with the palace facade as the backdrop. Every angle was beautiful.
- The Heritage Corridors: Long, symmetrical corridors with arched doorways created natural frames for couple portraits.
- The Poolside: A reflective pool surrounded by manicured hedges — perfect for early morning and golden hour portraits.
- The Royal Suites: The bride got ready in a suite with a floor-to-ceiling mirror and natural window light — ideal for getting-ready photography.
Day 1: Mehendi and Sangeet
The Mehendi
The mehendi was set up on the garden lawn under a canopy of marigolds and fairy lights. The bride wore a stunning yellow sharara with floral jewellery — fresh white jasmine against yellow fabric created a visual that was simultaneously traditional and contemporary.
Our favourite shots from the mehendi:
- The bride’s hands being painted by the mehendi artist — backlit by the afternoon sun, the henna cone creating intricate patterns
- The bride’s mother singing a traditional mehendi song with other women from the family — their faces lit by warm golden light, genuine emotion on every face
- A candid group shot of the bridesmaids, all showing their mehendi simultaneously, laughing
The Sangeet
The sangeet transformed the poolside into a Bollywood set — LED screens, professional sound, and a dance floor that saw hours of choreographed and spontaneous performances. Our cinematic highlight from this event was the couple’s coordinated dance to a medley of Bollywood songs — the chemistry was infectious.
Day 2: Haldi and Wedding Ceremony
Morning Haldi
The haldi was held on the smaller garden lawn — intimate, joyful, and beautifully chaotic. The couple wore matching white outfits (a smart choice — the yellow turmeric against white creates the most dramatic contrast). Within 30 minutes, everyone was drenched in yellow.
We positioned two photographers — one in the action zone (with rain covers on the cameras) and one at a safe distance for wide shots. The resulting gallery includes some of the most genuinely joyful images we have ever captured — faces covered in turmeric, mouths open in laughter, turmeric paste caught mid-air.
The Wedding Ceremony
The evening ceremony was the crown jewel. The mandap was set up on the grand lawn with the palace facade behind it — a towering structure of red and gold flowers, illuminated by thousands of tiny lights. The weather was perfect — a cool February evening with no wind.
Key ceremony moments we captured:
- The bride’s entrance: Walking through the arched corridor toward the mandap, escorted by her brothers, with the entire gathering rising to their feet. We shot this from three angles — a wide shot showing the full corridor, a medium shot of the bride’s face, and a close-up of her father’s expression.
- The jaimala: The groom was lifted by his friends (as is tradition), and the bride struggled to reach. The genuine laughter of both families, the competitive energy, the moment the garland finally landed — pure gold.
- The pheras: The fire glowing between the couple, the pandit’s chanting, the parents seated nearby — we used a longer lens to compress the scene and create intimate, cinematic frames.
- Kanyadaan: The father placing his daughter’s hand in the groom’s. The mother’s tears. We always position ourselves at a side angle for this moment — capturing both the parents’ expressions and the couple’s hands.
- The vidaai: The emotional climax. The bride’s mother completely broke down. The bride threw rice over her shoulder as tradition dictates, tears streaming. We captured this in both photo and slow-motion video — it is the moment that makes every viewer cry.
Day 3: Reception
The reception was held in The Umrao’s banquet hall — a grand, chandelier-lit space with warm lighting and reflective marble floors. The couple’s entry was through a corridor of sparklers held by guests — dramatic, cinematic, and perfectly lit.
The evening included performances, speeches, and a dance floor that did not stop until 2 AM. Our favourite reception shot: the couple slow-dancing alone after most guests had left, the empty dance floor around them, a single spotlight creating a pool of light. It was unplanned, unprompted, and perfect.
